Article 1: Qualities required for Successful Internet Marketing

Quality number one has to be
- Self Awareness. This business is hard work and can be disillusioning – take a long hard look at yourself and be sure that you are interested in this business because you’re sure you’ll like it – (not because your best friend loves it and seems to be making good money). You need to be creative and consistent to make this work. Therefore your personality needs to fit.

- If you have developed your self awareness, you will have considered your motivations enough to understand your purpose. Remember it’s one thing (and a good thing) to dream big, but you’ll only succeed in achieving your dreams if you plan and take one step at a time. You need to set realistic goals for yourself, then once you achieve, or exceed them, you can move that bar higher to help you reach the next level. Always focus on exactly what it is that you want to achieve. Visualise yourself attaining that goal regularly as you work towards it. Allow yourself to feel that achievement.

It helps to put your plan in writing and then tick off your goals and achievements. Make a note of what caused any setbacks and how to avoid these in future. It’s easier to work towards your goals if you see solid evidence of your achievements. Plus if you are working to a deadline, this will help you to manage your time better.

- Courage & Fortitude. It takes courage to sell online, and self promotion is an important aspect of your brand recognition. Learn to network and promote your product / business at every chance you get – you’ll get a better impression of the marketing possibilities for your product if you’re out there discussing it and pre-selling, (don’t forget to take notes to help you tweak the product / advertising process).

- Knowledge of your product. If you’re marketing a service, is the planned price cost effective? How much are other online entrepreneurs charging for a similar product or service? What is different about yours, why should people buy from you rather than anyone else? You cannot effectively market a product unless you know it thoroughly because you’ll eventually come across some really astute clients who will immediately sense any hesitations and lack of knowledge, so be sure to study your products before putting them up online. Get passionate about them and then promote them!

- Humility & willingness to keep learning new things. Internet marketing changes constantly, no matter how much experience you’ve had, you need to keep up with the latest trends and be flexible enough to incorporate new styles into your marketing and presentation. Continually research your target market, their demographics and what their needs are as well as information on pricing, cost and product features.

Remember that how ever great you think your product is to be able to compete in this setting, you must know your competition and what they have to offer, and more importantly how you can offer more. Aim to sell the best product and even when you believe that you do, strive to learn how you can make it even better.

- Healthy Scepticism. Forget any ideas you have about making a six figure income with minimal effort, even the most successful internet marketers didn’t achieve what they have by sitting back and doing nothing. Taking a short cut is most often going to mean making some sort of compromise in terms of your product or service quality. This won’t help your reputation or make you rich overnight. Your internet business is just that, a business, even if you’re able to work on the internet in your pajamas, your customers will expect professionalism and some level of support from you.

- Honesty. Don’t be tempted to fudge numbers and tell tall tales even when you’re nearly invisible on the internet. You want your business to last and to have loyal customers. Remember, that’s the real reason that sites publish testimonials from satisfied clients, to attract other potential buyers to check out your product and give them confidence.

- Willingness to strive towards your goals and a certain toughness. You need to be capable of spending hundreds of hours in product preparation and marketing with very little gain in the pre-release stage. There may well be times when you get so frustrated you think of giving up, but that’s normal. The majority of netrepreneurs experience this.

- Focus. Working from home in your own time can be wonderful but it can also be pretty distracting. You need to be able to set time and space boundaries regardless of if you have a family or if you simply have lots of hobbies. Taking the odd hour or two, maybe even the odd couple of days may seem forgivable, but think of the time you’ll miss and the potential clients that you let slip from your hands. You might never have the chance to find them again. Remember, internet marketers are born each & every minute. As each day passes, the competition only gets tougher.

- Ability to learn to outsource and recognise your limitations. You may do some outsourcing right at the beginning, you may prefer to wait until your business begins to bloom. You need to be able to recognize when you need help though, because try as you might, there will be times when you just can’t handle everything alone. Your business is open 24/7 so you can only do so much to keep up with it...

- Self Management Skills. Being your own boss means being your own motivator, supervisor, accountant, personnel and chief cheerleader. You need to be able to recognise if you are slipping and then motivate yourself. The good news is that it is possible to establish a good work routine and then you’ll be set.

- Money Management Skills. The internet is a highly volatile environment, remember to save for emergencies and make a back-up plan to tide you over in emergencies. Internet marketing is a business venture so make sure you have your priorities set out.

- Ability to Follow Through. Don’t think that your marketing work is complete once you have sent out an online advert. Ask for advice from friends and colleagues make a note of their comments. Change your product or service if you think it needs it to adapt to this feedback, then promote it again.
